The Ethereum network successfully completed its "Dencun" upgrade on Wednesday, which is meant to help it become faster and cheaper to use. The price of ether has been trading lower since then, which was expected based on the cryptocurrency's behavior following previous tech upgrades. "High activity on the Ethereum network has caused high transaction fees and, consequently, more fees burnt," Julio Moreno, CryptoQuant's head of research, said in a note Wednesday. High transaction activity causes network fees to spike, more fees being burnt and total supply to decrease." They're hoping that the combination of increased activity and the decrease in the supply of ether over time will push the token's price higher.

But the notion that “Girls” might well belong in a discussion about the most valuable photographs in history raises a question: How did an otherwise obscure commercial photographer, who spent much of his career photographing celebrities and politicians for magazines like Parade and Life, crash a party filled with some of the most famous artists in the world? The answer starts with the image, of course, which is a brassy, joyful combination of glamour and urban grit with a dash of “Mad Men”-era nostalgia. The building embodies a glorious slab of vanishing New York City, and those women look like they’re ready to break into song. Starting around 2010, and before his death in 2019, Gigli produced, printed and signed hundreds of copies of the photograph, in a variety of sizes and on a variety of photographic papers. He did so at the behest of his son, Ogden, 63, a photographer who now runs his father’s estate and who masterminded the unique sales strategy that turned the image into a phenomenon.

The rate of suburban poverty rose three times faster than urban poverty between 2019 and 2022. The skyrocketing cost of housing in major cities is one factor pushing lower-income people out of cities. But the pandemic has accelerated the trend of suburban poverty rising at a faster rate than urban poverty, according to new US Census data. While the rate of poverty is rising faster in suburbs than in cities overall, cities still have a higher per capita poverty rate on average. In 2022, 9.6% of suburban dwellers lived in poverty, while 16.2% of residents of major cities were poor, Brookings noted.

Student-loan borrowers are entering uncharted territoryThe Education Department has never had to reenter 28 million people into payments at the same time. Plus, federal servicers' technology may not be up to the task. In contrast, federal student-loan servicing has been contracted out to five companies, and the government doesn't have the resources to fully keep tabs on the industry. "So there really were deep-rooted structural problems in the loan programs on the policy design but also on the execution side," Kvaal said. As the years went on, the GAO continued to identify flaws in student-loan programs that were hurting borrowers.

Washington CNN —The Internal Revenue Service cannot locate thousands of microfilm cartridges storing millions of sensitive business and individual tax account records, a new watchdog report found. The tax information could be used to commit tax refund fraud, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, the office that conducted the report. During a site visit, the IRS was unable to locate any of the fiscal year 2010 microfilm cartridges that should have been sent to the Kansas City Tax Processing Center in 2022 after the Fresno Tax Processing Center closed. Separately, at the Ogden Tax Processing Center, IRS personnel were unaware of the current location of as many as 168 cartridges that had been sent out for reformatting, the report said. The IRS is also digitizing all paper-filed tax returns by 2025, which is expected to cut processing times in half and speed up refunds by four weeks, the agency said last week.

It's an opportunity worth watching for investors, and crypto speculators have recently been doing just that. Grayscale Investments recently highlighted three potential risks posed by AI that crypto could potentially limit – identity verification, centralization and data ownership and privacy. Accredited U.S. investors can gain direct exposure to AI-related crypto protocols by investing in private venture fundraising rounds, he added. "So far in 2023, venture capitalists have invested $422 million in crypto applications related to AI, privacy, and identity," according to Grayscale. "In total, the crypto-AI intersection represents more than 10% of total crypto venture capital (VC) funding to date, including two out of the four largest funding rounds."

In explaining our psychological troubles, van der Kolk highlights the role of what can loosely be labeled the primal regions of the brain, along with that of the body. The book has a certain kind of romantic appeal; it restores us to the natural world, to the animal kingdom. But while van der Kolk’s readership is vast, he is probably not the most essential figure in the somatic therapy movement. And beyond modern credit for its concepts, somatic therapy owes a debt to timeless practices like mindfulness and meditation.) Van der Kolk’s best-seller-dom and Levine’s legion of new practitioners speak to a current yearning for the holistic.
